나의 20대 2000 대 초반에 벨기에 유학을 꿈꾸던 시절이 있었다. 당시 벨기에를 현대무용의 메카로 만든 주인공, 빔 반데키부스와 그가 이끄는 울티마 베즈 무용단이 육체와 정신의 고독에 대한 강렬한 메시지, 블러쉬(Blush)와 선 보이는 작업마다 파격이었던 Peepling Tom 무용단 그리고 Jan Fabre 까지 현대무용가라면 벨기에에 가야한다고 생각했다. 20년이 지난후 난, 현대무용가에서 커뮤니티 작업자로 방향성이 바뀌어 영국으로 가게 되었다.

가장 매력적이라고 느낀것은 다양한 작업은 물론 당연한 작업들이었다. 다종다양한 커뮤니티 댄스의 실천적 방법들과 예술성ㆍ공공성의 접점을 느끼고자 시간과 열정을 쏟기로 결심했다. 물론, 딸 아이도 영국에 혼자 있기에 스트릿댄서로서 영국에서 배움의 길도 지켜보고 싶다.

런던 컨템포러리 댄스 스쿨 한국에서는 더 플레이스 극장으로 유명한 그 곳에서 석사과정으로 Participation, Communities, Activism 전공이 있다. 4주간의 레지던시 외에는 대부분 온라인 작업이다. 모색과 모험이 곧 펼쳐질 예정이다.

🔹 Motivation for studying abroad

I am seeking to challenge myself in a new environment and connect with people from diverse cultural and artistic perspectives. I am eager to explore the potential and authenticity of community dance and activism.

Second, the more personal reason is that my daughter has been studying dance in the UK since last year, and I hope to inspire her by showing that personal growth and exploration are lifelong journeys. I want to demonstrate—both to her and to myself—that it’s never too late to take new steps as an artist and as a person.

And so begins my six-month journey. The PCA (Participation, Communities, Activism) It’s all one-year MA courses, but I'm only going to spend 6 months in the UK and finish the rest in Korea, because I need to prepare my second child to start middle school. I wonder if I can go and do my activities smoothly in English? Juggling with many worries, it's time to pack my bags.
